Stillness Sunday: Rest Is a Need, Not a Luxury

We often treat rest like a reward, something we get to if we finish all the tasks on our list. But the truth is, rest is a need—not a luxury. Our bodies, our minds, and our hearts require it to function well. Without it, stress accumulates, emotions run unchecked, and clarity becomes impossible.
Years ago, I realized I was constantly running on empty, trying to prove I could do it all. I ignored the subtle signs—irritability, racing thoughts, fatigue—and kept pushing. One Sunday, I deliberately set aside time just to rest, no agenda, no distractions. I read a book slowly, sipped my coffee, and simply let myself exist without doing anything “productive.” That day reminded me that rest is not indulgent; it is essential.
You can give yourself that same gift today. Even small pauses—10 minutes of deep breathing, a short walk outside, sitting quietly in your favorite chair—help your nervous system reset and your spirit recharge.

Schedule a rest break today, even if it’s just 15 minutes, and fully commit to it. No devices, no multitasking.
Take a slow, intentional walk and notice your surroundings. What colors, sounds, and smells do you encounter?
Reflect on one thing you’re carrying from the past week. Imagine setting it down—physically or mentally—and releasing it for now.
Inviting God In
Rest is a rhythm God built into our lives. Scripture says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, NIV). Invite Him into your pause today. Let Him remind you that you don’t have to earn this rest—it’s a gift already available to you.
