Wellness Wednesday: Finding Calm in the Chaos

Last week was rough. Between tragedies in schools, violence against innocent people, and losses that shake communities, it’s easy to feel like the world is spinning out of control. And when the world feels chaotic, our minds and bodies often follow suit. Anxiety spikes, anger simmers, and sadness can feel endless.

Here’s the truth: you can’t control everything happening around you—but you can control how you respond. Finding calm doesn’t mean ignoring the chaos. It means giving yourself tools to stay grounded, to process your emotions, and to act from clarity instead of fear.

Ways to find calm in the chaos

  1. Pause and breathe – Even 3 slow, deep breaths can interrupt the spiral of panic or stress.

  2. Ground your body – Press your feet into the floor, notice the weight in your chair, or gently stretch your shoulders. Your body can anchor your mind.

  3. Limit media exposure – Stay informed, but don’t let scrolling endlessly fuel fear or anger. Pick one trusted source and check updates intentionally.

  4. Name your emotions – Say it out loud: “I feel scared,” “I feel sad,” “I feel angry.” Naming them takes away some of their power.

  5. Do one small, kind action – Text a friend, help a neighbor, or donate to a cause. Even tiny acts of care remind you that hope and agency exist.

Inviting God In

When chaos surrounds us, God is the calm we can hold onto. Scripture reminds us: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27, NIV). Invite Him into your moments of fear and frustration. Ask for perspective, clarity, and the ability to extend peace—even in small ways—to yourself and those around you.

Try This

  • Take a 5-minute pause today—close your eyes, breathe slowly, and notice your body.

  • Write down one emotion you’re feeling and one action that can help you feel anchored.

  • Repeat throughout the day whenever the world feels overwhelming.
