Truthbomb Tuesday: Anxiety Lies – Why Your Worry Isn’t Reality

Worry is sneaky. It can whisper just enough truth to feel urgent, convincing, and even unavoidable—but most of the time, it’s lying. Anxiety doesn’t want you to see the facts; it wants to pull you into “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios.

Here’s the truth: just because you think it, doesn’t mean it’s true. Worry thrives on probability, assumption, and exaggeration—not reality. And yet, when we let it run unchecked, it can dictate our decisions, drain our energy, and steal our peace.

How to spot the lies anxiety tells

  1. Extreme language alert – Words like always, never, must, or can’t are anxiety exaggerations, not truth.

  2. Catastrophe thinking – If your mind jumps immediately to the worst-case scenario, that’s anxiety talking, not reality.

  3. Emotional reasoning – Feeling scared doesn’t make something dangerous real. Emotions are information, not proof.

Inviting God In

Anxiety wants control, but God doesn’t. Scripture says: “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7, NIV). When worry starts to take over, pause and hand it over. Ask Him for perspective, peace, and clarity—He’s already holding the truth you’re struggling to see.

Try This

  • Write down a current worry that’s taking up space in your mind.

  • Ask yourself: Is this worry based on fact or assumption?

  • Replace one “what if” thought with a truth statement. For example, “I might feel anxious, but that doesn’t mean disaster is coming.”
