Life doesn’t always happen the way we expect. Tragedies, disappointments, and the chaos of the week can make us feel stuck, powerless, or even hopeless. But here’s the truth: how we see a situation often matters more than the situation itself. Perspective shapes our emotions, decisions, and even the energy we bring to our day.
Think of it like wearing glasses—some lenses make everything blurry and dark, while others help you see light, hope, and opportunities. You get to choose which pair you put on. That doesn’t mean ignoring reality or pretending everything is fine. It means looking for what is true, helpful, and life-giving amidst the noise.
Ways to shift your perspective
Reframe the story – Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” or “How might this be an opportunity in disguise?”
Step back – Give yourself mental space before reacting. A short walk, a few deep breaths, or journaling can help you see the bigger picture.
Seek a second opinion – Talk to someone you trust. Sometimes another viewpoint is all it takes to see possibilities you missed.
Focus on what you can control – Let go of things outside your power; invest energy where you can make a difference.
Count the constants – Identify what remains good, true, or steady in your life, even when everything else feels unstable.
Inviting God In
Perspective isn’t just about changing how we see—it’s about seeing through God’s eyes. Scripture says: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord (Isaiah 55:8, NIV). When we invite God into our mindset, He helps us step back from the chaos, see beyond the immediate, and embrace a view filled with hope, wisdom, and clarity.
Try This
Pick one challenge you’re facing today. Write down two ways to look at it differently—one practical, one faith-based.
When frustration or worry hits, pause and ask, “Am I seeing this clearly, or through my stress glasses?”
Practice this daily; perspective is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
