Stillness Sunday: The Power of Breath Prayers

Our breath is something we rarely notice until it’s taken from us. Yet, from the very beginning, God breathed life into humanity (Genesis 2:7). That same breath can become a quiet prayer, a rhythm of inhaling truth and exhaling surrender.

Here’s something amazing: did you know that simply breathing speaks the name of God? The very sound of inhaling and exhaling echoes Yahweh. Every breath we take whispers His name. How cool is that?

This is why I love breath prayers so much. They aren’t just calming practices—they’re reminders that God designed His very name to be spoken over your body in a way that resets your nervous system. Breathing in and out with intention invites soul-resting peace.

I always say we grow on purpose. So why not let your breath be purposeful, too?

One of my favorite breath prayers is this:

  • Inhale: You dwell in me

  • Exhale: I will honor You

It’s not about fancy words or lengthy prayers—it’s about aligning your body, mind, and spirit with God’s presence in the moment. You can pray it while you’re driving, doing dishes, lying awake at night, or sitting in stillness.

Try This:

  1. Write Your Own: Choose one truth about God and one response from your heart. (Example: Inhale: Your peace is near / Exhale: I will not fear.)

  2. Practice Daily: Set aside 2–3 minutes to breathe slowly and pray through your chosen words.

  3. Anchor the Moment: The next time stress rises, return to your breath prayer before reacting.

Inviting God:

  • Ask God to show you one truth you need to breathe in today.

  • Invite Him to reveal what you need to let go of with each exhale.

  • Reflect on how His name—spoken with every breath—brings peace to your body and spirit.
