Soulful Saturday: Beard Hair and Gratitude

This morning, I noticed the usual traces of beard hair in the sink after my husband shaved. He tries to clean up, but inevitably there’s always some left behind. For a moment, I felt that familiar temptation to be annoyed. But then I remembered something I heard years ago, back when I was single and longing for God to bring me a husband:

“That thing your husband does that drives you crazy is the same thing someone else would be grateful to deal with—because it means they have a husband.”

Back then, those words pierced my heart with longing. Today, they bring me back to gratitude. Because yes, life together means dealing with quirks, frustrations, and messes. That’s just humans living with humans—flawed, forgetful, and imperfect. But the perspective we choose makes all the difference.

This morning, instead of resentment, I smiled. I wiped the sink clean and whispered a thank you to God that I have a husband to clean up after. Gratitude shifted my heart, softened my spirit, and made space for love to flow.

Are there times when issues need to be addressed? Absolutely. But most of the time, the deeper issue isn’t beard hair—it’s our perspective.

Try This:

  1. Catch the first thought: When you feel irritation rise, pause and notice it.

  2. Shift to gratitude: Ask yourself, What does this annoyance remind me I’m blessed to have?

  3. Choose love over resentment: Sometimes the most powerful act is simply to smile and let it go.

Inviting God

Take a moment to reflect on where small annoyances show up in your life. Instead of focusing on the mess or the flaw, ask God to help you see the blessing hidden inside it. Gratitude is often where His presence becomes clearest.
