Fact-Checking Friday: Staying Present Helps You Heal

It’s easy to drift into the past or the future. Anxiety pulls us ahead, rehearsing every possible “what if.” Depression tugs us backward, replaying old wounds. But peace and healing? They happen in the present.
Here’s the fact: when you stay in the present, your body has space to process the grief you feel and the trauma you’ve endured. Your nervous system was designed to regulate in real time. When you anchor in the moment—breathing slowly, noticing your surroundings—you’re giving your body the chance to settle instead of staying locked in fight-or-flight.
Think about it: when you’re replaying yesterday’s pain, your body can’t tell it’s over. It reacts as if it’s happening all over again. When you’re stuck in tomorrow’s fears, your body prepares for a threat that hasn’t even come. But when you remain here, in this moment, you’re teaching your body that you are safe enough to process and let healing unfold.
This is why staying present matters—it’s not just a mental exercise, it’s a physical and spiritual act of grounding yourself where God is already with you. He doesn’t meet us in the imaginary fears of the future or the looping regrets of the past. He meets us here, today.
Try This:
Use your senses: Pause and name one thing you can see, hear, feel, smell, and taste.
Ground yourself physically: Place your hand on your chest, take three slow breaths, and notice your body calming.
Speak truth to your mind: “I don’t need to relive yesterday or fix tomorrow. I can be here, now.”
Inviting God:
Ask God to anchor you in the present moment. Invite Him to meet you in the here and now, where His peace is available even in the midst of pain. Healing doesn’t happen in the shadows of the past or the fears of the future—it happens with Him, in this very breath.
